Holvars, R. 1962 Erebia ferruginea 11 June Barrow, Alaska In flight, The birds superficially resemble Red Pollardipes - due to dark red underparts + silver white wing lining. - A course shape, posture, behaviour are radically different. No wing flushing - see from life bird. 12 June The pair was located at 10:20 & was watched for an hour or so. The bird would feed - usually within 50' of the other - then M. S. would make his way toward M. F. & This would end in a courtship display (see below). As he would feed - The white call was given + frequent trillo-sequences - given part or in their entirety Tchuk, Tchuk-Tchuk - Whia-ja, whia-ja, whia-ja, whia-ja, whia-ja - jeerēpa - where -- -- -- eeeee - jeerēpa - whenever This is the entire sequence - 2 to 3 introductory - stage notes - 3-6 trilly notes - a sharp, loud, musical jeerēpa (whether of earlier notes) & then the cubine was given. This entire sequence is given on the ground or
