Phalaropus fulicarius
14 July Barrow, Alaska
A large flock of 30-60 birds seen
in the plot area near 20.3 - 20.4.
Most (There were 98 but a few)
85 were mixed in. This is the first
by flock noted this year. The 85
are still generally scattered
over the tundra, but occasionally,
several are seen together as a pair
or closing over the tundra. The
rest at the north end (the south end
was being incubated) of the 85 was
excited at my presence. There was
no piping that could be seen. No
phalarope young have yet been
reported.
17 July Barrow - Akkavaq, Alaska
Most (The 98 have left, and 85)
are now the only ones seen. In fact,
there now appear to be flocks
of 85 or more which were
feeding foraging or if they were
through nesting. When flushed
they fly off above the area.
No broods have been seen
yet by anyone (except I possibly in
by Wobry). The last by the pond N01
The waning had left the tundra
