Phalaropus fulicarius
2.
22 June - Barrow (Irkutsk), Alaska
The female would chase the ♂ back
and forth along pond or from one
pond to another.
23 June Barrow, Alaska
Several dozen noted today. These
involved several ♂ chasing
a ♀. The ♂ even fighting among
themselves, apparently, over the ♀.
One such case involved 5♂; all
fighting over 1♀. There would
often be actual physical
contact (wing flapping, etc.) at the
ground, or one ♂ would try to
mount the ♀ (? - This is Barrows'
questionable since it happened
so quickly). These outbreaks were
1/4th followed by a chase
which would last for 10-30
yards - then the brawl would
start again.
26 June Barrow, Alaska
Phalaropes are still abundant, but
now the pairs seem to be mainly
concerned with nesting. Chasing
is rarely seen except between
members of a pair. At this time,
The ♂ seems to be more aggressive
