Erolia ferruginea
9 June Barrow, Alaska
pond-marsh area 20' W. 1 1/4th Road in the
same general locality - it flew
across the road + off to the north - not to be
seen again.
The alert posture of the bird is similar
that for alpina but the neck is longer +
so the head is carried higher + the sickle-
shaped bill is more pronounced (may be
accentuated by the longer-stretched neck).
The call note is an often-repeated
chi-dip, chi-dip... - given in a high
pitched - almost buzzy manner -
has no quality of a Baird's Scr. display
note. There was also a zip,zip...
Note given on ground - colour is similar
to (but high pitched - more like bairdi
quality) The Dunlin's zhipp,zhipp.
Also when the bird would land after flying - one wing
was held vertically for about half a second - then
lowered quickly with the normal folded position.
11 June
2 birds located about 600 yards No.1 Wahlshlag Slope
adjacent to Elson Lagoon. - Watched for 1 1/2 hours -
as they chased back + forth over an area 1
hill polygon + wet boughs - some sculpin mark & new -
just becoming fine of snow.
When first seen - they were flying low at high speed -
over the ground - emitting a high pitched buzzy note.
