R. Zweifel 1953 Journal July 6 Here, who also had a couple of senovitas for rent. We drove on after dark in order to collect on the road, there were intermittent showers up until about 10:30 PM. Several Bufo cognatus and B. punctatus were taken. Three Thamnophis (aquas & massaius), one Hypsigena ochrocephala, and a single Janpropeltis gelulus splendida were found alive on the road. The latter species had not previously been recorded for Durango. Camp was made two miles north of Durango city July 7 Arrived in Durango in the morning, spent some time shopping. Durango actually has a serve-yourself supermarket, supermarket style. Looks right out of the States, even to the signs, in English, warning about carrying children in the food basket. An excellent paved road runs from Durango to El Salto, a distance of 64 miles. Past El Salto the roadbed is largely gravel, but is heavily traveled and well kept up. Logging activities in this vicinity seem not to have devastated the forest, but merely opened it up. Repro- duction is heavy in the pine stands. In some places the young growth is thick enough that it probably should be thinned for best timber production.
