R. Zweifel 1953 Journal 7 mi. SW El Vergel (Zagunita) 7800', Chihuahua, Mexico July 3 Today we drove to the present end of the road on which we are camped, and which will eventually go to Guadalupe y Calvo. At present the road ends at the Tunas Ranch. From this point we hiked down a canyon for about 1 1/2 miles. This locality is recorded as 3 mi NE Rio Verde, a locality subject to alteration if and when good maps become available. It is seven miles by road past our present campsite. The canyon is relatively narrow with steep rocky walls, the canyon bottom being 50-100' wide until it opens up about 1 1/2 miles below the Tunas Ranch. For most of the way, the stream flows on or close to bedrock and is shallow. There are a few pools up to 2' in depth. The canyon bottom shows much evidence of severe scouring action during high water. Yellow pine are the dominant trees here. There are groves of aspen at some spots along the canyon walls, and willows where the canyon opens up. The elevation is about 7600'. Rana pipiens was common in the creek, but not so abundant as in Arroyo Cuervo Blanco. Hyliod tadyola was taken but no adults. A single small Bufo was found; this is marked contrast to their extreme abundance at Arroyo Cuervo Blanco.
