return to Chihuahua City and drive south. We camped
at an abandoned adobe 1,6 mi. W Pedernales in
the overgrazed piñon - oak association.
June 27
Nesting robins were present here. Bill shot a
brown towhee and poorwills were heard after dark.
Scrub jays and flycatchers also were present.
Reptiles collected included Pitophis catenifer,
Sceloporus jarrovi and Sceloporus poinsettii.
The commonest bird throughout this “alti-plano”
region is the horned lark. Probably the intense
cultivation with destruction of the oak scrub and
overgrazing have combined to allow a considerable
expansion of the area occupied by this bird.
Leaving the Pedernales camp, we drove to
Hidalgo del Parial. On Parial we met an American
(Bryan
Bruce [illegible], Apt 85, Parial) working for the
American Smelting and Refining Co. Lead and
silver mine in Parial. His offer of liquid
refreshment was accepted with impolite haste, and
resulted in our spending the night at his home
and even included the use of a swimming pool.
The capture of a Bufo punctatus at the swimming
pool justified this excursion.
