June 23
Samalayuca, Chihuahua, where we camped in the
sand dunes. No snakes were seen on the 37 miles
of night driving to our campsite. Bright moon-
light again.
June 24
Collected 6 Cnemidophorus tigris in the sand
dunes at our campsite before driving south
to Chihuahua again. The ride from Guarez is monotonous in
the extreme. Sometimes Yanea desert, most mostly
just overgrazed country which shows little to
indicate what it might look like under native
conditions.
Several Phrynosora cornutum were seen on the
highway and one secured by the simple expedient
of running over its head. This was 22 mi N
Ahumada. The only snake seen was a DOR
Mastrophis flagellum (not saved) at 5 miles S
Ahumada. A Sceloporus undulatus was
found in a well at a roadside park 14 mi NNE
Chihuahua.
After stopping in Chihuahua city to pick
up mail, we drove west along the road to
Cuantémoc (San Antonio on older maps). There is a
new paved highway extending the 105 km from Chihuahua
to Cuantémoc. Beyond that point a fairly well
graded dirt road takes over.
