D. Zweifel 1453 Journal 9 mi N Mazatlan, 100', Sinaloa, Mexico July 13 14 After this morning's rain I shot a large, ramoses yellow and black bird. Bird hunting in the thorn forest is considerably more difficult than in other places where we have worked on this trip. The forest is so thick that when close enough to see the bird, you are too close to use the 16 gauge. Tonight we returned to the pond described in yesterday's notes. The water had receded so that only about half the former surface area remained, and the stream feeding the pond was dry. There was rain this morning, but evidently not enough to maintain the water level. There was no breeding activity in the pond. Several Dioglena, Smilisca and Agalychnis were found in trees around the pond. A little Hypopachus (?) was found giving its buzzing call from a bed of dry leaves near the muddy stream bottom. Jerry found a Lystrophus diplopterus by the pond this afternoon. Maximum temp. 91°, min. 73° F July 15 Collecting this morning in the Thorn Forest gave a Stelophorus, a few Cromidophores and a Salvadora hexalepis. Also shot a vireo (2526) which was singing in a tree.
