En route, to Adjuntas camp to Mazatlan.
July 11
frequently deposit parts of themselves on it. For much of
the way, heavy rain fell and clouds enveloped the
road, making it necessary to drive with the lights on.
16 miles by road past La Ciudad (in Sinaloa?)
I found a small Crataegus lapidus under a rock by
the roadside. This is at the foot of a cliff in pine-oak
forest, elevation 7600'
Camp was made at an elevation of 6700' just past
the "town" of Revolcaderos. Logging has opened up
the pine-oak forest so that the individual trees stand
about 40' apart. Bromeliads are abundant, and there
is a lush undergrowth of grass, ferns, and many
other plants. Agaves are abundant on rocky outcrops.
At least two kinds of pine are present here, one being
the peculiar "weeping pine".
July 12
Continued on to Mazatlan. A stop 33.6 road miles
past La Ciudad, 6400', yielded Bana sp?, Scleronymus
(ganon?) and an Anolis. Logged pine-oak-madrone.
A DOR Crataegus lapidus was found just a mile down the
road, and another three miles down. Neither was in
condition to be saved.
At 50 road miles past La Ciudad we stopped at
a stream and collected several Bana. A Scleronymus,
possibly S. bulleri, was also seen here. The Bana
may represent a new species related to B. sierramadreensis
