En route La Cijuntas camp to Mozatlan'
July 11
Broke camp about noon and drove on toward
Mozatlan'. The main road runs through La Ciudad;
evidently a change from last year when Tatin and Weitz-
man had to make a side trip to get to La Ciudad.
1.8 mi before reaching La Ciudad, we came to a vast
(8000')
meadow in the pine forest. Hyila eximia were abundant
here, some calling from their positions in the grass, others
hidden under pieces of wood lying on the meadow.
Four transformed Amblystoma mexicanum was taken
here, one under a fallen fence post in the meadow, the
others under pieces of wood in the adjacent open forest.
Two of those are probably adult; the larger is largely
black, possessing spotting only on the sides. Adult salamanders
of this species have not been collected before.
Sceloporus poinsetti was present on rocky outcrops here,
even as some several hundred feet out in the meadow.
About three miles past La Ciudad a small Crotalus
pricei was picked up on the road.
Some ten miles past La Ciudad the road turns
down a ridge and permits the first good view of the
Barranca region. It follows along ridge sides for
many miles, losing altitude very slowly. The scenery
along this route is nothing short of spectacular. From
the road you look down thousands of feet into the
sagged Barranca while hundreds of feet of vertical,
multicolored cliffs lie directly above the road, and
