Rana muscosa
Sage Hen Creek, 6500', Nevada Co., Calif.
Apr. 29
(The following copied from Bob Hoffman's notes.)
16:00 Just above the station in some small, 1-2' deep potholes next to the creek, some adult Rana as well as overwintered tadpoles were seen. There have been no frogs along the creek itself. I walked a good bit of it in the Kiln Meadow and above and below the station.
16:30 Collected three single males and an amplexing pair from a pothole on the north side of the creek. Also collected three egg masses (one looks somewhat different--an earlier stage of development?). The water temperature around the eggs was 47° F.; [illegible] in a some-what deeper part of the hole, at the same depth (1½") 49.8° F. One tadpole, about 2½" long was collected--the others in this hole are about the same size.
17:00 On the south side of the creek another amplexing pair was collected; water temp was 48.4° F. Four smaller tadpoles were taken from this hole; they are 1½--2" long. The hole is a shallow one.
17:15 Returned to the station. The egg masses were placed in the refrigerator (water temperature 43.8° F.
