Rana sierrae
French Joe Meadow, 3mi. SW Johnswdale,
Tulare Co., Calif.
2074-2107 AZ
April 26, 1953
A very moist meadow, elevation about 6000'
(from Tozer Sheet), in the yellow pine, incense
cedar, white fir forest.
Young Rana sierrae were found to be very
abundant in a small, weedy pond in the
meadow. 14 was taken here and many more
seen. No adults were seen, however. Water
temperature 20.0°C.
Another nearby pond contained very few
frogs but many large tadpoles. One of the
five captured has the front legs nearly
ready to appear. The tadpoles frequent
the farther edge of the pond where the
water temperature at 3:00 PM was 23.4°C.
It is obvious that the tadpoles overwintered
as such, but what about the young frogs?
I am inclined to the belief that they
overwintered as tadpoles and transformed
soon after the snow melted. Perhaps
the tadpoles in the "frog" pond were more
advanced than the others when overtaken
by winter.

Tadpoles preserved today. In some the
front legs have appeared and tail resorption
has begun.
