Butte Co. Calif.
The Munays, Bill Bremer and I
left Berkeley at 10:15 AM and arrived
in the vicinity of Chico about 3 1/2
hours later. We drove to De Sable
by way of the road which parallels
Butte Creek. The canyon has been cut through
layers of alternating sandstone and conglomer-
ate which outcrop in the form of ledges.
There are many springs in these outcrops
so that the whole region appears, at least
at this season, rather wellwatered.
In the digger-pine-blue oak
association 10.4 mi. 55W De Sable,
we collected Sceloporus occidentalis,
2 Cnemidophorus skeletonatus and observed
many Batrachoseps. The lizards were
found beneath boards and logs.
Just south of the road junction at
De Sable, a road heads down into
the canyon towards some mines. 1/4 mi. W De Sable, on this road, 4
Rana dr. bayllei were collected (see species
account). Hyla were breeding in a
pond. Plant associates: Douglas
Fir, yellow pine, bay, canyon oak.
