Pituophis catenifer connectens
For Caballos Camp, Cuyamaca Rancho
State Park, San Diego Co., Calif.
June 25, 1952
In a grassy meadow on the Jeffrey pine
front, I was attracted by the scolding
of a pair of meadowlarks. I found two
gopher snakes at their nest. One snake,
a female, had already eaten at least
one young meadowlark and was working
on another. The other snake, a male,
was ignoring the food but trying to
mate with the female. This was about
9:30 AM, DST. Later in the afternoon, in
a cage, copulation was accomplished.
