In the Santa Monica Mountains, Uta does not seem to range much to the east of Topanga Canyon, although west of that canyon the lizard is abundant East of Topanga Canyon, the mountains are composed largely of shales and granodiorites which permits a heavy growth of chaparral, rather completely blanketing the mountains.
