R. Zweifel Carthamus coelestis 105 Butte Meadows, Butte Co., Calif. Redgray color more capitolized 1869 +69 - adult; s-v 95mm. Mid-dorsal area between Septentrio then and Roman Green, shading into Prunella Yellow in the granular scales of the lateral fold. Neck & top of head Deep Bull Grey, stopping abruptly at the insertion of the foreleg, and starting about one row of Temporal scales be- hind the eye, but extending some distance forward along the supralabials. Anterior head scales (snout region) Yellowish Citrine. Chin and throat as far back as foreleg insertion white with indefinite gray markings. Ventral scales of body between Naples yellow and Mustard Yellow, deepening to Prune- shine yellow on the most lateral row. Ventral surface of tail paler than body white near anal opening, becoming grayish white about 5 cm. back. Dorsal surface of tail anteriorly colored same as body, shading into Dark Bull Grey posteriorly. 1868 +68, sub-adult, s-v 71 mm. Show some yellow in lateral fold - rest brown. No gus. Venter white
