Rana aurora cascadae
5200 ft
Con Hollow, 1 mi. S, 5 mi. E Butte Meadows,
Butte Co., Calif.
Oct. 10, 1952
A sub-adult found resting on a branch
6" above the water (branch extending into
stagnant water) beside an 8' x 5' x 1' deep level pool
the main stream. The main stream is
about 15' wide here, up to 2' deep and fast
flowing. Time 1:30 PM. Sun behind cloud.
White fir, lodgepole pine, yellow pine, incense
cedar prominent. Sugar pine & red fir present.
Caught another sub-adult in a pool in a small
tributary stream a few yards from the main
stream. Where it enters the main stream,
the tributary is about 5' wide and 1' deep.
I followed the tributary up a relatively steep
slope about 50 yards to where it opened into
a small (200 x 30 yds), lodgepole pine
bordered meadow. The stream follows the
edge of the meadow and averages 2' wide x
1' deep. Another small R. a. cascadae was
cought in this stream.
(indors cont.)
All together, 12 were captured by Dr. Stabbins & myself. Of this number, only two was in the main stream, the rest in slow tributaries or in isolated pools.
