Diocleotomus smeatua
Wedell Creek, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
1953 R. Zweifel
A larva about 3" long was seen to swim
to the bottom of a 4" deep pool in a small,
(3' wide) rapid hillside stream, water temp.
12°C. It was captured. This is called
Bessie Creek, according to a sign where it
crosses the road. The surrounding vegetation
is typical redwood forest. Prominent
plants along the stream are sword fern,
marten fern, Oxalis and thimble-berry.
Several other larvae were seen in other
pools in this and in another stream.
