R. Zweifel 262 Ensalina escheholtzii klauberi Aug 3, 1951 1 1/2 mi SSE Paso Picacho Camp, Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, San Diego Co, Calif. At 10:30 AM I split a large (3' diameter x 6' long) cotton oak log and uncovered an adult male Ensalina in the cool, decayed material in the middle of the log. A little more digging revealed a large, tailless female in the rotten wood next the lower bark. The interior of the log seemed relatively cool, but the decayed wood was not even moist enough to cling together when squeezed. The surrounding forest is composed of coastal pine, Jeffrey pines, and black oak with a few incense cedars. The ground is quite dry - shows no sign of the rain which fell 6 days ago. Elevation 4450 feet.
