EAST ENTRANCE PINNACLES N.P., MON. 1100' FT. SAN BENITO CO. CALIF.
MA 22 Drove down from Border with Dr. W.B. Quay & Mrs. Q. of Zoo Dept. V.L. Set out 50 mus. +4 years speed, just to right of entrance to movement about 200-300 ft (vertical) on hillsides above road. Dr. Quay set so large shadows live rocks. Also on hillsides at 100+ ft above road a white flowering Ceratodus-like plant up to 8 ft high grew thickly & made walking thru almost impossible in spots. Another plant (Crisus?) predominates higher on slopes - these plants were 3-4 ft. tall, 2 ft. in dia. + roughly 3 ft or more apart. The ground was open tho. Beneath these plants there mostly grass with only a rather sparse areas in spots. Dr. Quay set his traps under plants directly at their bases - I set mine in open between the plants. Dr. Q got 5 D.to elephantinum, 3 D.to heleniumi, 1 P.paranthus (conf?) + several Psoriscus nevad + maniculatus. I got only 1 D.to elephantinum (?) + 2 P. maniculatus. Saw scat of coyote on hill & found musky Venus on rocks in am. Camped 4 mile to south of gate to movement as campgrounds were crowded, so fit in summer for camping, none now. Stream water & picnic tables & fences in Mon.
