Large holes in center of mounds in the fields. Picked up years + left before 0600. Left night I saw a small dia. (Pencil-5.250) snake in a small hole in ground. Waited for 15 min's but snake was watching me & even after 20+3 false starts would not leave hole. I finally made a go ob for him when it became almost to dark to see but missed - out into borrow but could not find snake. Eyes seemed quite prominent + markings on neck + head resembles Hypsiglena but will have to check '091 in books when return from trip. Ate breakfast in Carmng & left for Berkeley about 0730. Drove west on State Hwy 198 to San Lucas.
