A.L. ZIEBEL 1959 Balaenoptera physalus Central California, A Coast, Calif. July 15 E.O. Rosenblum of Zoo Dept. U.C. Brought in a chunk of baleen plates for me. Taken from Rt. side of movin. Shows dividing line btw. Whitish plates in front of movin to darker ones behind. Rosenblum said longest plates lay behind this chunk & that they were half as long as those he brought in. Animal was 8, 60 ft. total length. July 16 A 60^t ft. q had a 6 ft. Emb. Corpora Luteum about 5 in. in dia. About 10 or 12 corpora total. Ovary about 1-1 1/2 ft. long x 8 in. thick. The forward 1/4 of Rt. Vagina (x lower?) jaw & baleen are whitish; the rest dark; left side all dark. No ovaries or lice - men said this species seldom have them. No hair noticed on adult but Emb. Had 2 lines of bristles on very tip of chin. + scattered bristles otherwise free of snout. But out pelvic cartilages of Emb. - just beside anus. Could not find those of Adult in the stripped meat - with wood on the carcass next time (after blubber is stripped). A Mr. Rice,^5 Fish & Wildlife, stationed in Seattle but on summer duty
