A.L. Beeler 1959 Thomomys monticola Power Flat, 5000+ ft. 12 mi. NW Happy Camp S. Siskiyou Co. Calif. Aug. 8 Burrowing evident in front on coors of wooded slopes surrounding it. Fresh cores formed in snow also seen in ditches. Took 1 in two sets, smallish; no sport. Brownish downy grey soil. Aug. 9 Took another in a one-year set. Animal legs and with a deep hunk of muscle taken out of back between fore shoulders. Blood in it still green. Last year but Got nothing today or Aug. 10 so removed trap. Aug. 12 A large Ø with long beakum fallen this am. Dug into another fairly large burrow to set trap & a small yo. ♀ ran out of hole a foot away. Caught & skinned it. The large Ø had a fresh bite near tip of tooth. He was apparently in breeding condition. Aug. 13. Large Ø x yo ♀ taken today. Sets in several burrows have given no results for a day now. But Creek, 4300 ft. 8 mi. S Chester, Plumas Co. Calif. Aug. 18 ♀ taken in creek-5.05 monday. Only 2 other fresh workings noticed & I caught nothing with sets in there. Animals avoid the very thick sod in meadow & use hill side just below this meadow grass too.
