Squirrel Observations
POKER FLAT, 5000 FT. 1/2 MI. NW HAVAY CAMP, Siskiyou Co., CA.
Aug 14. Had heard only 1 in 6 days here. But today saw 2 chasing each other along the swift sassafras near camp. Went back with gun & squatted for 1/4 hour but saw none. Walked up to road & heard call notes of "PAA" changing to "PAA-OOW" when I approached. Shot it (with too heavy charge & ruined skin). Walked up road 1/4 mi. but heard no more. Coming back heard another in same tree giving same sequence of call-notes. Waited 1 hour but animal would not leave top of very tall cottonwood. Finally took a long shot but only succeeded in driving it down near where I lost it. The skin I put up was in poor shape - a breeding male. The one I missed was larger & seemed in better shape.
But Creek, 4300 ft. 8 mi. S Chester, Plumas Co., California
Aug 17 Shot 2 OT's along logging road 1/2 mi. from camp. Saw 2 or 3 others. Best way to shoot them seems to be to walk quietly along roads or thru woods & wait for them on logs - in trees they seem to run for cover on other side of tree when approached.
Cottontail lizards about 3 times as evident as this year.
