Ascaphus nevis
Poker Flat, 5000' ft, 12 mi. NW Happy Camp, S. sd/100 Co., Calif.
Aug. 8 Worked the slowly-moving stream bred of camp & took 30+ adults (mostly ?), 30+ tadpoles & 25+ metamorphosing individuals in about 3
afternoon.
Or 4 hours. Worked other sections of stream where water is colder swifter but got only 4 adults & saw only 2 tadpoles. Greatest concentration of adults was at vet. of a cold swift stream coming down a steep slope + the slow stream formed by seepage from the flat. Here at vet. got 15+ adults in 10 ft of stream. Many under moss-covered rocks at edge of water.
All frogs taken were under at least 2 inches of water & all except one was under a flat rock. The metamorphosing ones were concentrated in a slow, warm part of seepage stream & occurred only along about 30-50 ft. of it. Tadpoles were seen in most parts of seepage stream. Both adults + tadpoles were most frequently found just below a slight riffle or bubbling water section. Some of the frogs had a small part of fin above water & were often in plain sight. Adults always out of sight & except in 4 or 5 cases were facing upstream. Adults usually remain still when uncovered + are difficult
