A.C. Ziegler 1959 Journal Dear Creek Camp, 4 mi. N Grassville, Humboldt Co., Calif. At 10:15 am Aug 7 Left Bend with wife & Uos & drove 232 mi. To above local where camped o/n @ 50¢ per person. Tables, water & stove at each campsite River next to camp. Good cedar bedsrooms & Showers. Saw 6" cat and many tiny larvae in River, also young (3/4") Toads & Coliceros on dirt Bike & one Tascher. Shot at Bats while standing in River & got one. My Ross rim small yotes. lost 4 or 5 more good shots - wonderful Shot for shooting & lots of smallish bats. Saw one very large one but was out of range. Very hot weather. Was 110° in Uk, ore. Poder Flat, 5000 ft; 12 mi. NW Heart Camp, Siskiyou Co., Calif. Aug. 8 Left Dear Creek Camp at 10 am & drove 245 mi. to Flat. Bore poor from Willow Creek And the way to Flat. Arrived at Flat about 8: pm & set up camp. Too hot to trail. 3 Fire fighters stationed in flat & other areas in anticipation of lightning fires. No cows seen in flat this year. They were here during De Benson's & my visit - 2 years ago. Very hot weather in area. Aug. 9 Flock of Golden orp's Hummers in camp, also some Nutthatches (ros or'0?) Made gasper & examining trans sets & moved camp across Flat during p.m. Spent next day cleaning camp & setting up new line.
