Oryctomys torridus
Sept. 10
Scissors Crossing, Coey Quail Valley, San Diego Co., Cal.
Perry took about 5 at this locality &
7 at 3/4 mi. S, 2 1/2 mi. E Scissors Pass area. (I was
immature) toiled along with D.P.O. Moberly,
D.P.O. Dennis (Lonny), Perez, Longmorns &
Perez. manicurus, also i Neonales.
Did not seem to be restricted to burrows
or burrow openings but were taken in open
also. When skunko seemed to have some
sort of "slunky" scent, perry put from other
planes.
3/4 mi. N Manzana 3600 ft., McCann Valley, San Diego Co.
Sept. 13
I toiled here - in year in which at
10:00 PM last night & Perez Longmorns
was found with its brain nearly eaten
from above & below.
Out no other pest or booty damaged.
Skull was gone close up to the cradiform
phase. Recognatus apparently eaten in
place since was not observed of skin.
Purely circumstantial evidence but I
think it was Oryctomys which ate
the Perez.
