Sorex ornatus
Strawberry Canyon (West Botanical Gardens), Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calt.
Feb 20 Put up 4 javelin in snags & live trees by F. Camp & B. Terrio (students in Zoo 128 class). With food below just what the habitat they trapped was.
1 other Sorex ornatus discarded because of broken skull. Found inguinal glands, two cervices on flank of both ♂ & ♀, ♂ alone had the large (inguinal) glands just behind the anus. Could be confused with testes at a quick glance. ♂ had obvious "iron" or "baggly" odor - possibly from these own glands. ♀ very enlarged but no scars or embryos visible & no mammary issues. These 4 went to Dept Zoo, 113 student coll.
Apr 23. One javelin in live tree dead in AM. ♂ - inguinal glands (??) dorsal-ventral from anus & base of tail) almost size of testes (3 x 6mm). No marked odor to unbroken glands - perhaps since animal was still very freshy
June 10 2 dead in live trees too high up Cyclotron Road from Bot. Gardens. Still had food (almond oats & bird seed) in teeth. Both YR males, both 3.3 ozs. Testes ± 1 x 1mm ± 1 x 1½ mm. One showed definite molt pattern. Caught also 1 Atheris + 2 Rhipidurus canescens.
2 mi N St. Mary's College, Corpus Christi Co., Calif.
Oct 1 ♂ brought in by cat, testes 2 x 1mm (old ?; not fat); inguinal glands not evident no musky odor.; well bitten but not at all eaten by cat.
