"Bear"
3700' ft.
BREAD SHAW MT COMP, JTN, R. 15 E, SEC. 13, Siskiyou Co., Calif.
Aug. 22 Dr. Benson identified drawings beside road as those of bear. Said the
feet had dirt & other debris in them.
I saw a foot-long, 6 inch wide gouge in
a very rotten log on dry hills, of which
I thought might possibly have been
made by a bear tearing into the log.
Saw a 5 inch dia hole in dead terminal
grown tree 4 or 5 ft. off ground. Hole
was 3 or 4 inches deep & showed 2 claw
marks on upper edge. Also saw about
same size hole but about 8 inches deep
dug into side of a large rotten fallen
log. Grooves made by claws clearly mark
into lower edge of hole.
Aug. 23 End Valley Guard Sta., T. 14 N, R. 4 E, SEC. 23, San Norte Co., Calif.
4300' ft.
Found 2 piles of [illegible] droppings probably of
bear as they contained much coarse leaf matter
& other veg. material. A Mr. Lambert said
bears were thin this time of year and were
occasionally seen in this area. He did not
seem to think bears do as much damage
to young-gro woody trees as some people said.
