Nov.4 Put up for M.V.Z. a PRECIPINE on Nov.5
shot by Dr. Benson on recent Coyote
trapping trip to vicinity Susanville,
Lassen Co., Calif. A.C.Z. #946 + [illegible]
(down to chaws). Ward Russell noticed upon
cleaning skull that it had a fresh
break on side of lower jaw and also
an old injury to the supraorbital
region which showed bone spurs being
deposited to close the wound. Dr. Benson
shot the animal thru the body and
said it seemed to have
gentured before
he shot it. Maybe hid by car twice.
Dr. Benson said animal kept its
body towards him as he approached
and that it was difficult to get
a good shot at any other spot besides
the rump. The trail was kept low
apparently. Found 1 live tick among
the spines which came out while
skinning animal. Dr. B. thought coat was
prime. Ward that animal seemed but
seemingly not too young a one.
Esauhus put in bovine & given to Pigg
Party of V.C. Zoo. Dept. I now have quite
a bit of respect for the quills after seeing
the great # of them + the ease with which
they can imbed- also the ease with which they are taken.
