TAKEN IN VICINITY FREMONT ISLANDS SAN FRANCISCO BAY.

ONE MAN WOULD PULL AT A PORTION OF
WHALE WITH A 3-4 FOOT LONG METAL
HOOK AS THE OTHER CUT OFF ONE
CHUNK FROM THE REMAINING MASS OF
MEAT. THE CHUNKS CUT OFF WERE
ROUGHLY 1-1/2 FT SQUARE - JUST ABOUT
THE SIZE THAT TWO MEN, WORKING
TOGETHER, COULD PICK IT UP WITH POLES
ABOUT RAKE-HANDLE SIZE WITH THIN
HOOKS ON THE ENDS. THE CHUNKS WERE
THEN LOADED INTO A SKINNER HAPPER
ON THE FRONT OF A FORK-LIFT-LIKE
TRUCK TO BE TAKEN NEXT DOOR &
DUMPED INTO THE VAT OF A RENDERING
COMPANY WHICH APPARENTLY HEATED
MUCH OF THE OIL OUT; PRESSED THE
RESIDUE OUT & SAVED THE "MEAT"
REMAINING FOR HI-PROTEIN (~70%)
CHICKEN & TURKEY FEED. I COULD NOT
FIND OUT WHAT WAS DONE WITH THE
OIL BUT A WORKER SAID MUCH WAS
SENT TO GERMANY. APPARENTLY TWO
GRADES OF OIL ARE PRODUCED IN THIS
PLANT BUT I DIDN'T GET THE DETAILS.
BACK AT THE WHALE CUTS WERE MADE
IN THE BLUBBER WHICH WAS 4-6 IN. THICK
UNDER THE 1/2 IN THICK BLACK SKIN AND CARCASS
