Feb 13 V.C. Botanical Gardens, Berkeley, Alameda Co., Cal., F Hermit Thrush (Hylocichla guttata) 10:15 am - Saw 1 on chicken manure patch beside path. Slow movements, no scratching at ground. Tail only very slightly reddish, no tail raising. Brown flying insects flying over open manure patch. Maybe thrush was eating those that hit or those others crawling on ground. 11:00 am - 3 or 4 more noticed around paths & on ground in bushes. 2 or 3 times tail was raised accompanied by a wing flutter. Quiet birds - both in action & voice. Sny t easily disturbed, and so, but when observers still they seem to carry on activity nearby & approaching w/in 20-30 ft. we so.
