Journal Feb 26 U.C. Botanical Gardens, Bordley, Plamda Co., California Hiked up at 10:30 am. Clear, fairly warm, slight wind. 4 of Red-tailed Hawks seen were carrying on some sort of display (mating?). One of the two in each pair of them both flying behind the other with legs & feet held straight down stiffly and occasionally swooping down on the other. At Gardens birds were still thick around the Chicken manure piles but noticeably lacking were White-crowned Sparrows - none seen or heard. Saw what looked like a 1mm. Purple Finch (either caulif. or Carins, I don't know which) feeding on large berries on ground. Fairly olive-brown above (not just brown) especially on rump. Very quiet singing bird. No calls or song. Stowwe Jays seemed very much in evidence as were Spotted Townees & Brown Townees were hard to find. Heard a song I didn't know from Bachris thicket in NE part of gardens. "see chirrrrrr" (-~--) Repeated several times maybe 20 or 30 seconds apart. Clear first note & chirr on about same pitch. Ran down the Hutton Virgos call "Zu-weep" (it sometimes runs together as Zweeps). Also got good looks at the bird near the Country Husbandry building. I think I've camera some Hutton's Virgos Ruby-cre's Hummers before but think I've got them straight now. At 11:15 am heard Stowee (?) Jays 'shy'm'
