February 1956 Journal Feb 6 Berkeley Hills near Botanical Gardens, Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif. Drove up to U.C. Botanical Gardens with Jay Schnorr (a grad. student working part time in ornithology in mammals in MUZ) to try to collect the Williamssons Sapsucker. Jay had a 4:10 gun and was shooting #12 shells. When we got to same woods as described yesterday we saw the bird within a few mins and after we both identified it again, Jay shot (at) it but apparently got only a feather or two since the bird was seen over the gardens (thru the pines) flying a little erratically before we lost sight of it. We went into the gardens and searched the grounds but found no sign of it. I did see a Red-breasted Sapsucker on ground in botanical gardens, head & throat all red except for some kind of dark mark running back thru the eye.) again. This was about 3:16 P.M. An afterno we searched the pines again til about 5:00 PM. We saw no sign of the Williamssons Sapsucker again.
