A.C. ZIEBROD 1957 PROCYON LOTOR Jan 24 Big Basin State Park, T.E.S., L3W, Santa Cruz Co., Calif. (1000 FT.) Saw 1 20 ft. from my car prowled in 'G' campground Spotted him with lite but he made off thru wood & I lost him on stream. This was about 8:00. Heard calls which were probably the coon. One just like a whip cracking "See-Whap" given twice & repeated once in 30 sec's or so. As I was setting up tents in 'F' camp, I heard 2 spring - I went back to look saw a big coon (Maybe someone as before in 'G' 700 yds away?) He moved slow in lite but as soon as he moved into a tree's shadow he must have run along the shadow cause he sure disappeared quick. I saw him a minute later & finally got him to tree. Eyes shined yellowish sometimes (esp on ground) but sort of bluish- yellow when in tree. He went up 20 ft, but while lite was still on him, came down to 6' of gnd. I missed tho, so he didn't have a chance to get all way down. After scaring him several times he went back up 30' & sat cleaning his fur. Claws were used to hold limbs around only bark - not just wrapping tree. He sometimes came down a few feet head first - holding on like a squirrel, but mostly just backing down. Got him & 20 min. later came back but he was gone. No calls given while I looked at him. Feb 17 President Hill, Conner Costa Co., California. I sent into MUC by Frank J.
