Meras Co. State Park, Meras Co., Kansas
Set mus spee's & rat traps in marshy & also some dry areas with
2 ft. hi vegetation. Caught 3 young
in hand at hour (4:30 -5:00 pm), got
an adult ♀ & 5 more young. In morning
Got 3 more young (also 3 Peromyscus +1Mus)
Many traps were springing -- probably
by the adult cotton rats which were
not killed by them. Dr. Quay, who
live nears got 3 adults & some young
but no other species in same type of
habitat. We found a few runs made
by geas [illegible] and these with zero geas
fruiting heads along them but none
of runs looked as worn as
a well-used microtus run. Also no
"dappings seen along these runs. Make
small quantities of cut geas stems
threads were seen in more open
vegetation (geas & some kind of broad
leeco plant - timsonweed or marigold
"sunflower") but traps set here
were unisprung except for 1
Peromyscus, the cotton rats were
confinced, as presently, to relatively
small areas -- slightly damp
& with thick, tall geas. Even
with the large # of them the
damage to geas & other proviwus was
not noticeable. The adult ♀ had 8
25 mm cm's. Rat traps or live traps
are needed to catch the adults.
