Wolfson 1938 June 10 Junco oreganus montana 11 mi. W, 1 mi S Mitchell, Wheeler Co. Or. 985C Flushed male and female from nest on ground. ? flew first to yellow pine 10' away and scolded. Then ♂ flew and responded similarly. Area was open; dominant tree was yellow pine with white fir and larch interspersed. Ground cover was grass and a legume - average height about 18 inches. Nest on a small dirt mound under a young white fir 12 inches tall. Exposure to N and E mainly but not distinctly so. Nest of dried grass and on surface of the rim was dried lichen roots commonly found on the larches in this locality. There were 4 young in the nest - about 36-48 hours old. Flesh colored a darks pink, with two tufts of black down, one on crown and one on lower breast. Location as above. June 13. Three Juncos seen-just out of nest. Tails about one-half inch long. Were in grass about 10 inches tall and almost continually uttered high pitched notes.
