Pygmy Owl
June 12, 11 mi. W, 7 mi. S Mitchell, Wheeler Co., Ore.
Elev. 4850 ft. Collected one male this morning. Found in dense forest, well shaded, of white fir, Douglas fir, yellow pine, and lodgepole pine. Followed a scolding Ruby-crowned Kinglet and suddenly glimpsed this small stocky bird sitting quietly in larch. Approached within 15 ft.
and shot - missed. Owl flew 25 ft.
and perched again. Collected. A.H.M.
Had wounded this bird the evening before. No sounds were given. Coloration decidedly con-cealing especially in the dark dense tree clumps. Hadn't noticed the outline of the bird until a few seconds had passed. Some small pellets found in this region and apparently are of this species. Contained humerus and femur of small mouse and re-
mainsof an insect.
