July 13,
(cont.)
51.
1/6 mi S, 3 mi E Lostine, 5500 ft, Wallowa Co., Ore.
ground cover was pure needles almost
exclusively with few herbaceous
plants and growthy but dead logs large
and small were abundant. A small
stream ran thru one corner of the area.
About 50 traps were set here, and about
1/2 mile was covered. We then
returned to the bridge and started
another trap line along the Lostine
R. The line began a few hundred
yards N of the bridge and ran about
1 mile to the S. The forest was of the
type previously described, and part of
the area was previously trapped (July 9)
Three gopher sets were made, and about
50 traps were set along this line.
It was not a continuous line but
broken up three times with large
distances over "poor" trapping areas.
On the afternoon the rat traps and
1 remaining gopher set were examined.
Nothing caught - all traps brought
back to camp.
July 14: Left camp at 7:00 a. m. to examine
mouse traps. Examined the 1st
line and had caught 4 Clethrionomys.
All were caught near or beside
