Holmes,R. 1960 Erolia alpina 15. 28 June Wainright, Alaska Red-backs were quite common near the dealium site. During our 3 1/4 hour walk around this area, birds seemed to be present almost everywhere. Several birds performed the mount run which indicates that nesting is still under way. Displaying birds were fairly common, but few chicks were seen. Most of the birds were molting. 30 June Skrovaile, Alaska Red-back activity was low this morning when I ran the census a bit north 40. A pair at the north end appeared to have a nest nearby. This will have to be found soon. The pair nesting north of the green inlet (see 8.2) was not present today. When the nest was checked, it was found destroyed. A lemming burrow was nearby, and 2 of the eggs had rolled into this hole (in the mossy covering). There were no remains of the other two eggs, so it seems probable that a predator (fox or weasel, ?) may have taken the 2 missing eggs while the other two were rolled into the lemming burrow. The actual location of the cup could not be determined.
