The intervals of 1/2-1 sec, the wing was vibrated
very rapidly in a terminal position. This is
usually the form when the bird just alighted.
2 June Barrow, Alaska
One bird heard displaying behind the
lot, one heard on the west shore of
footprint. Now seen as heard near
Barrowik. One heard in the evening
near the south end of village slough.
3 June Barrow, Alaska
One seen along the beach ridge, feeding
in one to small thawed ponds.
One seen near Elna town collected. Then a pair?
seen feeding on a polygon top. There two
took flight from my approach & flew
30 yards towards the south. The ? landed
and the male did a low (10-15 ft) aerial
display. Just as he finished, another
bird flew in & closed the pair out &
followed closely behind them for about
200 yards before turning back. Territorial
boundaries have been established.
Further south along the lagoon, a bird
was seen feeding in the polygon troughs.
After a few minutes she was joined by a
displaying male. Both birds fed for awhile
& then both chased a third bird
