Holmes, R. 1963 C. Alpinia 1/4. 21 june Barrow, Alaska Display activity was extremely low - only I and 8-0 (or any kind) I these noted. 6 displays we heard during Thours - 1st plot. Nearly all the nest have been stumbled on to acerentraeal - since the birds aren't seen until flushed. 22 june As noted above, chasing elks 8-0 - 9-0 has rarely been seen this summer. Only occasional display are heard. Nest # 11 - 30' E of Gouwell lake - 300 yds north 1 footprint lake - On small moss/lichen covered polygons - scattered flavenny heads / Dog around eggs giving only 59, cover. The nest was only scantily lined with grass blades. Display a brood ring - same 7 kraa's in 5 sec + 15 in 10 sec with a pause inbetween. The 40 sec krass followed by a 3 sec hell, 5 crans, 2 sec hell, 2 min 1 kraa's - followed by a large discordant hell 15 sec. Total song was Our lasted 2 min - 20 sec. - the bird we sensed, keeping both wings at vertical for about 1 sec before lowering them into normal position.
