18 July Barrow, Alaska
Pair + 1 young from nest 1 The Bear Ridge - in
novel toward Central Marsh. The chick
was about < week old. The only other
encountered was 1 at Sand end /B, D -
at nest #16 - where egg were still
present.
19 July - Flocks present in the No. U.P.B. Area - Varying
in number from 3-16. Probably total
of 50-60 bird wall - no young seen.
All those seen were faders, in or near the ponds
in shallow water - block mud.
Nest #18 near forest area still with
4 eggs. The incubating bird was off the
nest when I got to the nest - but was
standing nearby - giving no returns -
no distraction display.
During the 3 hours spent in the meat
area - an aerial trial was heard once,
but was given in a feeble way. The
RB seems to be the only species which
uses its trill as an aggressive note
beyond the period of territorial defense. It
is often given when the bird is startled
or disturbed - with no other preliminary
notes. The trill at the time of the season,
however, is weaker and more variable in
pitch than a full-bodied resonant trill during
