Erōliā alpina
14 July Barrow, Alaska
Nest #12 was empty - a bird nearby
was heard giving an alarm note - brrrpg -
so the brood may have been off in the
distance. I've seen new Eros - I collected
no sign of young.
The E was incubating at nest #16. It flew
off when I was 28' away - flew low to the
ground (1-2') - a strong flight, landed
40' away in an area of hypoliths - went
running off through the ptys, through a
hunched prairie. After checking the eggs -
I walked toward the area & found a
bird sneaking off - Short A. Tway -
shaven, no birdland return. It gave
the Tway alarm notes.
#18
Nest #18 - 5? incubating - flew off when I
was 25' away - gave two calls at it
then flew over the ground - landing 300' away
& began to feed. As it landed - it gave
a partial wing flap - it tried to
spread & it fluttered low to the ground -
but no more display was observed.
A flock of 9 - apparently willow warblers
was seen No 1 North area in by
Lowenburg. Most these were feeding.
