Erolia alpina
4 July Barrow, Alaska
Nest #2 checked - a bird flew off when
I was 40' away, flew low over the
Tundra, landing 25' away - giving
the nasal-trilled alarm not
rat, rat, rat - when can begive - several
pitches - sometimes as high as a
sound like yel, yel, yuak. - They usually
come in 3's but occasionally sequence
up to 6+7 were heard.
Suddenly a group of 8 birds were present -
They may have been a flock or neighbor
pairs & soon lost and / disappeared
but - since they were surrounded by
these birds. One & - suddenly began to
give a distraction display - with wing
spread, out too to the side & moving
away from me - slowly. A 8 next to be -
trilled - lifted head + both wing-tail
in about normal position - trilled again &
walked behind this displaying bird.
Suddenly another 8 nearby raised one
wing (not quite - most) toward the
other displaying individuals - but
its feet was partially lowered & pectoral
slightly spread - The head look
held low - beak trilled moved
forward to apparent courting best info
