Erolia alpina
24 June Barrow, Alaska
The nest at the southern plot - was
accidentally stepped on. When I returned 3
hours later - one egg shell had been moved
3" away from the cup, I was still in
the cup as the 2 were not hatched.
Held the incubating bird to remove the two -
as apparently is done at hatching -
but a predator took over. North Bel. RD
was seen at this time. The scene is still
26 June Very few display heard yesterday or today -
but weather was clear & there was little
activity generally. The nest - No B.P.-No-
the 4 stands were checked yesterday,
The eggs & the adults never gone.
27 June Skroavik - very little display activity on the census
plot - the nests were all present & being incubated -
in each case by the bird (as far as I could see). In
all cases today - the birds left the nest before I
was within 60' - the bird flew directly for
the cup - landing between 40 + 100' away - going
into a slight crouch - run - then straightening
up - on a mound - giving an excited re-ri-ri -
The running bird moved forward to another
mound - standing erect - calling again. If
I would follow her - it would run off
through the brush in a mouse run -
all the while looking both at the shoulders.
