Erolia alpina
17 June Barrow, Alaska
Very little activity along the beet ridge &
Elsa Lagoon. One bird was seen doing
a nest cup display; when the tail & folded
wings were sliding up with the air & the
bird was moving them from side to side.
The was performed in two cups [both with bare
bottoms & no grass] & the sides were only scantily
lined. Nest #1 (W.B.R.) - was being incubated by
the 8-9 young not to be seen.
Only one or two birds heard along Elsa Lagoon
& Wohlleber Slope during the entire cold
afternoon.
In the evening, Stevenson located 4 nests
(#3 -> 6) on the area in E. east of Wohl Area.
#3 was located on a grassy hummock - near
several - block-topped [grassy] high polygons. It
was surrounded by tall grass & fedges - covered it
from view - looked 8" both in edge.
polygon - 4 eggs.
#4 on grassy-sedge covered slope - directly
S. of the missile site - again in tall grass - so.
approx. 4 eggs
#5 - on same slope as #4 - but 130 yards
further to the E. - again 4 eggs - in nut cover
by grassy fedges.
#6 - on the bluff from E - with 4 eggs -
low polygon - with 4 eggs. - covered on sedge.
