Holmes, P. 1962 2 June Barrow, Alaska Erolia alpina 1 group of 3 was noted near Wobbleby Lagoon - otherwise only pairs & singles were noted. Display & chasing was quite noticeable. Several chases involving 4 birds was noted - apparently 2 pairs were involved. It is quite frequent to see 3 birds - i.e. the mate & the defender following him as he chases. Or inbreeds to a familiar - but at this stage, paired birds are moving & they are chased out by both members of the pair. The pair usually flies immediately behind the displaying bird + as far as 2 can counter - On hills given an aid by the bird? Some chasing & seemingly aggressive acts was noted between two birds. For birds were seen on the ground (i.e. adjacent). Chasing: One who would run several feet & then fly to another open patch / ground - it would be followed by the aggressor (?) who would adopt the following posture - after landing: head forward, partial tail extended; back feathers ruffled, tail driven up in approximately normal position; legs partly bent - giving a crouched appearance. & the rodent-run-like posture - the bird would run off.
