Crolia alpina
3 June Barrow, Alaska
Two or Three displays heard along the brock
ridge, south of ATCS. One was seen heard,
just west of the gas line. Along the shore
of Elm Lagoon, north of Wohlechlog Slough,
2 birds were located in company with
2 Sanderling. Moving further north, 2 lone
individuals were collected.
4 June: This was the most common sandpiper today.
Many aerial displays were heard near VDP1 area,
Redbark ridge (Cer Ridge? St. Print), and near
Stevavik. Along the shore of family lagoon
in the high area where the hummock was exposed,
a pair of RB were found. After watching
them feed for several minutes, I collected 1 (a P-
#1082). As he lay fluttering, the female walked up
behind after a few seconds, stood next to it, her
head was held erect, tail depressed so that it was
almost touching the ground (-it was not
spread) but the wings were held in normal
position. In this posture, she walked around
the bird several times; no calls were heard.
The female (#1081) was then collected. A third bird (P)
(1080) flushed displayed - in air with bill,
etc., then landed near the 2 wounded birds,
peering around - unusual, possibly slightly
upright posture.
Another pair was seen along Redbark Ridge then
